About Z-Index

Z-Index maintains and updates the G-Standaard, the official Dutch drug database used by all healthcare stakeholders in the Netherlands. The G-Standaard contains comprehensive information on all products dispensed by or used in pharmacies, facilitating efficient and accurate data exchange across the healthcare system.

The Dutch Drug Database: G-Standaard

The G-Standaard provides detailed information on:

  • Licensed medicines
  • Unlicensed medicines (e.g. raw materials and compounded preparations)
  • Vitamins and dietary supplements
  • Homeopathic medicines
  • Medical devices
Z-Index and the G-Standaard

Over 100,000 healthcare products are registered in the G-Standaard. Each product entry includes essential information such as pharmacovigilance data, pricing, logistics, and reimbursement policies of various health insurers.

Healthcare professionals use the G-Standaard in a variety of ways:

  • Physicians consult the G-Standaard to find available medicines and prescribe accurate dosages.
  • Pharmacists use it to check for potential drug interactions (pharmacovigilance) and verify insurance reimbursements. It also supports direct invoicing to insurers.
  • Pharmacists, wholesalers, and manufacturers rely on the database to place orders and manage inventory.

Z-Index’s Role in the G-Standaard

Z-Index acts as a trusted intermediary, ensuring that the data in the G-Standaard is accurate, up to date, and accessible through software vendors. To maintain data quality, Z-Index works closely with manufacturers, wholesalers, scientific institutions, regulatory bodies, and the government, both as data providers and end users.

Pharmacotherapeutic information in the G-Standaard is supplied by the Medicines Information Centre (Geneesmiddel Informatie Centrum) of the Royal Dutch Pharmacists Association (KNMP).

G-Standaard Data Entry Portal for Manufacturers

The G-Standaard Data Entry Portal allows registered manufacturers to submit new healthcare products or update existing ones. Updated information is distributed via the G-Standaard’s monthly production cycle, ensuring it reaches all relevant prescribing, dispensing, and ordering systems in the Dutch healthcare market.

More details can be found in the Instruction Manual.

Z-Index adheres to a strict monthly production schedule to guarantee timely integration of updates. Software vendors use these updates to ensure healthcare IT systems - used by pharmacies, general practitioners, hospitals, and insurers - are always current. This process relies on all data providers, including over 700 manufacturers, to follow the production schedule closely.
